Before the NextGen summer program, I always thought highly of myself. Little did I know that after, my entire self view would change. Throughout my time in high school, I failed in winning over my teammates and carrying the group to succession. Always my rules, my ideas. Unbeknownst to me, that was soon about to change. 23rd of June came the day of reckoning. I packed my bags and woke JP up for our 6:00 grab ride. I take my first steps into the program room with the same expectations except something isn’t right; this time my teammates are different, my environment is different, and my guidance is different as well. With these key differences, I learned not only more about philanthropy and being empathetic for the people you’re trying to help, but also the art of leading, selling, and being a team player. I learned that when seeking your idea, you must consider the interests of the recipients as well as religion, country and race. In terms of learning to be a team player, I learned that not everything goes your way. In order to survive and succeed, you need to accept when you aren’t the leader, when your idea isn’t chosen, and most importantly: to swallow your pride and put your all into the project no matter how bad the idea or your teammates are.
