NextGen in Bali | Learning from the Bali Children Foundation

As part of the NextGen Advanced Learning Journey in Bali, outstanding Next Generation Philanthropy Leadership Program students had the privilege of visiting the Bali Children Foundation (BCF), an organization that has spent decades transforming the lives of underprivileged children across rural and remote areas of Bali.

When the students arrived at BCF, they were welcomed with warmth and curiosity by the local students and staff. What struck participants immediately was how education, something many of them often take for granted, can be a lifeline and a bridge to opportunity for young people growing up in villages with limited resources.

Students heard the stories of children whose lives had been completely transformed through scholarships, English and digital literacy programs, and pathways to higher education. NextGen students also had a chance to learn more about the systemic challenges faced by families face in such regions, where poverty, limited access to secondary schools, and the pressure for children to leave school early to support their households are huge obstacles. Yet despite these challenges, there was a strong sense of hope and resilience instilled in students through the truly meaningful work done by Bali Children Foundation.

Founder of Bali Children’s Foundation, Ms. Margaret Barry shared with the group how the organization was born from a simple desire to help children access education and has since grown into a movement that has touched tens of thousands of young lives. Her message to the NextGen students was clear and inspiring: that leadership is not defined by privilege or resources, but by the willingness to act with compassion and persistence. For the students, this encounter was not just an eye-opening glimpse into grassroots impact, but also a reminder of the responsibility they carry as the next generation of changemakers to channel their skills and opportunities into building a more equitable world.

The visit wasn’t only about observing; it was about connection. Students had a rare opportunity to interact with members of the BCF team where they exchanged perspectives, and even shared their own journeys as young changemakers. In those conversations, the barriers of language and culture gave way to mutual curiosity and encouragement.

For NextGen, this encounter was a reminder that leadership begins with empathy. The lessons our participants took away from BCF will stay with them far beyond this trip, shaping the kind of leaders they aspire to be : leaders who understand that impact is built through trust, humility, and sustained commitment.

We are grateful to the Bali Children Foundation for opening their doors to us, and for showing our students what it truly means to change lives through education. This was not just a visit, but a story of shared humanity and hope. 💜
